An extra dimension
A tour to several of the artists by the Wadden Sea lends an extra dimension to a visit in the Danish part of the Wadden Sea environment.
Nature is reflected in the artsThe light, the sounds, the tides and the changing seasons vary more dramatically than elsewhere in Denmark. The Wadden Sea which is used as a forage place by millions of birds on their way to their breeding grounds, and has the same function again in the autumn, when the birds return to their winter quarters. These elements leave their traces in the arts, and have also influenced a large number of artists to settle in the marshes. The wealth of impressions to be gathered in nature is reflected not only in the play of colours in garments and the expressions to be found in paintings, prints and drawings. The history of the area merges with the works of the local ceramists and glass craftsmen, and best of all you can enjoy it all at close hand as a visitor.

The society of “ Art and Handicraft at the Wadden Sea” was established in 2002, and a large number of the members of the society may be visited in their workshops, or in the galleries situated many places in the impressive area. Just about all forms of artistic expression are to be found within fairly short travelling distances. There is wickerwork and paintings, sculptures and handicraft textiles, weaving, graphics and glass handicraft. The guide to the different artists and craftsmen can be found on the internet page www. vadehavskunst.dk , but also as a book at the artists’ and handicrafts’ and in the tourist bureaus.

To experience an artistic interpretation of the impressions, you yourself have personally gathered during your stay, opens to a new and wider perspective. When you leave you are full of new impressions and perhaps you have a tangible proof of Wadden Sea art being spread to other parts of the world. The artists in “ Art and Handicraft at the Wadden Sea” are all renowned artists in their field. This also explains why, the internationally known sculptor, Professor Bjørn Nørgaard, agreed to write the foreword of the book where the members of the society were first presented. There are altogether 38 members in the society. They each offer their own particular interpretation of the Wadden Sea environment, with the same geographical setting as their point of departure. This is unique. The fact that artists join forces is often the case, and has influenced art world-wide. The fact that artists residing in the same environment have founded a society is unusual. It means that you gain a very special experience, when you visit one of the artists in “Art and Handicraft at the Wadden Sea”.
Welcome.
