Bredebro and environs - a unique corner of Denmark

The Wadden Sea and the marsh are situated grandiosely. The dikes, which have been erected in the course of hundreds of years to ward off the sea, and artificial docks where upon the old marsh farms have been built. Here nature is unique as far as you can see.

The old watering mills which were used to water the livestock in the marshes were established in 1842. They are a popular outing for the local people.

Brede Å is fine trout water situated in a wonderful varying landscape, and it is one of the 10 best fishing waters. The restoration of the natural environment brought the natural winds of the stream back, as well as the spawning grounds of the salmon. There are many great moments to be had in nature along Brede Å. A trip by canoe on the stream likewise offers new experiences for the entire family.
Anglers can choose between Brede Å and Visby Fiskesø (fishing lake): two lakes situated in an area of natural beauty. There is a spring which means the water is pure and clear.

TRØJBORG SLOTSRUIN

Trøjborg Slotsruin (castle ruins) is the oldest attraction in Bredebro. The first Trøjborg was built in the 14th century. The castle had a number of different owners, and was finally demolished in 1854. Parts of the sourthern wall and the vault have been preserved, and today the castle ruins remain, surrounded picturesquely by the old moat. Many of the farms in the environs of Trøjborg have been built from the stones of Trøjborg.

LANGDYSSERNE VED ABTERP

Langdysserne ved Apterp (the long barrows) are two graves from the Stone Age and about 5,000 years old, one 14 m and the other 42 m long. Barrows and big stone graves are rare in the West of Schleswig, and they clearly illustrate that people have moved across the marshes during the past 5,000 years.

Go on a “treasure hunt” in this lovely area. You can find for example beautiful old churches in Ballum-Vesterende, Randerup and Skast, and of course Brede Kirke erected in the 13th century.

You can visit the farm of Hans and Hansigne Lorenzen in Bådsbøl-Ballum. It is open every year throughout July. The farm departs from the usual practise of construction in the parish, but still gives a good impression of what living conditions used to be like.
